Why does my toilet keep running after I flush?
A toilet that runs after flushing almost always has a problem inside the tank. The most common cause is a worn or warped flapper that no longer seals, letting water leak from the tank into the bowl and keeping the fill valve topping it off. A fill valve that won’t shut off or a float set too high can also cause problems. These are usually straightforward repairs, and fixing them stops the wasted water from showing up on your bill.
What causes a toilet to leak at the base?
When water appears at the base, the usual culprit is a failed wax ring, the seal between the toilet and the drain pipe in the floor. Once that seal breaks down, water escapes every time you flush. Loose bolts, a cracked base, a damaged or corroded toilet flange, or a bad subfloor that no longer holds the toilet level can also cause leaks. Base leaks are worth addressing quickly, because the water can reach the subfloor and cause damage you won’t see until it is significant.
How long does toilet installation take?
A standard toilet replacement usually takes about one to two hours. That covers removing the old unit, replacing the wax ring, setting and leveling the new toilet, connecting the supply line, and testing it. If there is a complication underneath, such as a damaged flange, it can take longer, and we will explain what we are seeing before we go further.
My toilet rocks. Should I be concerned?
A rocking toilet often indicates the seal beneath it is under stress, which can lead to leaks at the base over time. The cause might be loose bolts, a worn wax ring, or an uneven floor. It’s usually not an emergency, but it is not something to leave alone either, since the movement tends to make the underlying issue worse. We can find the cause and secure the toilet properly.
